How does the ECO scheme work?

You may already know you can reduce your energy bills with loft and cavity wall insulation. What you might not know is that with the government's ECO scheme, you may not have to pay for insulation at all.

This government scheme is designed to help people in the UK reduce energy loss in their homes and lower heating costs.

Improvements available:

Loft insulation

This is available if:

  • Any existing loft insulation is less than or equal to 100mm thick
  • Your loft is accessible
  • Your home doesn’t have any infestations or water damage
  • Oversized properties may not qualify.

What's included:

  • Installation of mineral wool insulation in your loft
  • Insulation of cold water tank and pipes in loft space
  • Up to five loft vents, as required
  • Up to six downlighter covers

What's not included:

  • We can't insulate rooms in the roof

Cavity wall insulation

Cavity wall insulation - Installing cavity wall insulation

This is available if:

  • Your home doesn’t already have cavity wall insulation
  • Your home was built before 1983
  • You have two or less storeys.

What's included:

  • Installation of approved cavity wall material in external walls
  • 25 year Ofgem approved guarantee.

What's not included:

  • We cannot provide insulation to unsuitable properties – this may be due to exposure conditions, cavity wall condition or narrow cavities
  • Scaffolding - if required.

Gas boiler replacement


This is available if your boiler is broken or running inefficiently and you're receiving one of the following(1):

  • Income Support
  • Universal Credit
  • Child Tax Credit and/or Working Tax Credit
  • Pension Credit.

What's included:

  • A highly efficient gas condensing boiler installed by our appointed contractor 
  • Boiler replacement in the same location connecting to existing pipe work and controls
  • Electrical works associated with boiler installation
  • Carbon monoxide detector
  • One year minimum warranty on parts and labour.

What's not included:

  • Non standard boilers, water cylinder replacement or upgrades
  • Replacement of any damaged parts or requested provision of new ones
  • Any additional or new pipe runs caused by boiler location changes or blockages
  • Any building or cosmetic works, or asbestos removal
  • We can’t replace back or floorstanding boilers and do not carry out boiler repairs or emergency boiler replacements.

Common questions asked:

Am I eligible for the ECO scheme?

  1. To have a gas boiler replacement, loft insulation and cavity wall insulation, you need to be a current EDF Energy customer and supplied by us for your electricity and/or gas, and in receipt of certain benefits. If you’re not supplied by us at the moment, get a quote today.
  2. You must either own (and live in) your home or be a private tenant(2)
  3. Your home must be considered suitable for loft or cavity wall insulation if you’d like these improvements(3) 
  4. For a subsidised replacement A-rated gas boiler(4), your current boiler must be broken or running inefficiently and someone in your household must receive one of the four qualifying benefits or benefit combinations. Please also have details of your boiler's make and model when you call us.(5)

How do I apply?

The first thing to do is call us on 0800 096 8634. We’ll run through the eligibility criteria (above) to check you qualify. If you qualify, we’ll set up a free, no obligation home assessment with one of our qualified installers. They’ll visit to check your house is suitable. It'll be around four weeks after you first get in touch with us.

What happens at the assessment?

The installation company will take some measurements and photos. The assessment will take around two to three hours, depending on the type of property you live in. You might need to show them some paperwork (like a tenancy agreement or proof of benefits). They’ll also need to do a technical survey – they’ll either do this on the same day as the assessment, or make an appointment with you to come back another day.

The installer will then tell you which improvements will be best for you. There might be some extra costs you need to pay but they’ll let you know what these are before they start the work.

How long do the improvements take to get installed?

As long as you’re happy to go ahead, the installer will book a date for the work – usually around four to five weeks after your technical survey. You’ll need to sign a contract with them for this.

Once the work’s finished, they’ll send your warranty and maintenance documents in the next two to three weeks.
